Recycled Oak Barn Frame

LCTF recently completed a recycled oak frame in Southampton, NY as part of a 16 million dollar renovation. LCTF is also securing more old barn oak for a frame to be erected in Pittsburgh, PA.

Wesley Epler Joins the Team

The latest addition to the Lancaster County Timber Frames, Inc. crew is Wesley Epler of Southern Lancaster County. Wes joins us as an artisan and was formerly employed with ManTech International Corporation as a computer technician. ManTech is a Government Contractor specialising in National Security.

Nantucket Project update

After completing the design contract for Nantucket's Great Harbor Yacht Club, LCTF was awarded the timber frame fabrication and erection contract . The clubhouse is scheduled to be erected in late summer to early fall.

Outdoor Timber Framed Pavilion & Bar

This week, 19 May, we raised a 30' x 60' timber framed pavilion and bar at the Prospectors Steakhouse & Saloon in Mount Laurel, NJ.

Summer Intern to Start at LCTF

At the beginning of June, David Utterback-Tyminski, an intern from the American College of the Building Arts in South Carolina will be joining us fro the summer. He will be our third intern from that institution. In the past, we have hosted interns from Penn State University, Virginia Tech and York Technical Institute.

Southampton, NY project...

We have begun our second project with Architect David Scott Parker. Our first project with him was on Nantucket and was framed from reclaimed chestnut; this project, to be done in two phases, is in Southampton and will be carved from reclaimed white oak.

- We have also committed to a 3rd and 4th project respectively with WDL Builders and Paul Adison Architects. Both projects will be raised in Medford, NJ.

Other news includes a visit to the Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum...
On Sunday April 6th a number of our team took advantage of a special, "contractors invitational" open house of the Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum where we raised a hybrid frame. We are eagerly looking forward to attending the Grand Opening of the space in September.

Gordon Drake joins LCTF

Gordon Drake, carpenter, licensed California General Contractor and jack of all joined LCTF as part of the Artisans Team on January 7th, 2008.

Gordon’s apprenticeship as a carpenter started right here in Lancaster County in the early 70’s when he began work as a general laborer and later, carpenter, for the Carl H. Sinz family construction business in Lititz, many of the skills he learned with Carl Sr. still serve him well today.

After graduating high school in 1975, Gordon’s path took him many places; Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Arts to study acting, sailing the Atlantic, Commercial Fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, a ranch hand in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, working for Drew Nierpont and then Wolfgang Puck in their famed restaurants in New York and Los Angeles, respectively, and on and on and on… Gordon always travelled with a hammer and saw in hand. Gordon’s most recent position in Los Angeles was that of self employed General Contractor, specializing in the renovation and restoration of historic Craftsmen Homes.

Gordon recently returned to Lancaster to raise his son in a more community based environment and is proud to note that Ralph attends 4th grade at his high school Alma Mater, Lancaster Country Day School. Among Gordon’s many pursuits are; genealogy research, documentary film making, web geek, horseshoes, bicycling, landscaping the yard, renovating his home and, above all, being as present and dedicated a father and husband as time will allow.

Gordon has enjoyed learning the craft of hand-carving beams with the skilled Artisans at LCTF as, unlike many skills one may learn in the building trades in the 21st century, it is as close to the wood as one gets without farming the trees. The company has welcomed Gordon with open arms coupled with clear guidance and the friendly corrections that are sure to cement a long friendship filled with camaraderie unmatched and pride in one’s work standing tall like the frames they build.

The crew finished raising the Coady Frame in Machipongo, VA.

The Eastern Shore of Virginia was teaming with wildlife and while the crew was there they spotted a Bald Eagle, several hawks and many other species of game. One crew member captured this photo of a red tail hawk as they were snapping pictures of the frame...

Erection of an octagonal timber frame interpretation of Thomas Jefferson’s retreat at Poplar Forest is now in process in Machipongo, VA. The Coady frame crew left the shop early Monday morning and given good weather should have the frame erected by weeks end. Stay tuned for pictures and follow up on the web site!

Tony, Amy and Tim attended the Timber Frame Business Council Conference in Burlington VT in March...

March 18, 2008 – Amy Weaver, VP-Finance/Business Manager for Lancaster County Timber Frames, Inc. (LCTF, Inc.) was elected the Secretary for the Executive Board of Directors of the Timber Frame Business Council (TFBC). She will serve as the Secretary for a one-year term and on the Board for a three-year term.
TFBC is a Hamilton, MT-based (relocating very soon to PA) North American trade organization of professionals involved in the timber frame building and restoration industry. Members include timber frame professionals, architects, engineers, general contractors, schools, and suppliers.
